How to control Stem Borer in Vineyards?

Hello Dear Farmers,

Vineyards are mainly infested with three types of blight, but Stromacium barbatum is mostly seen in pre-monsoon, first or second week of June. Stem borer completes its life cycle in 4 stages, egg, larva, pupa and adult. Stem borer cocoons and adult beetles are present inside the vine trunk. They usually came out through the holes in the trunk or cordons in the pre-monsoon, first fortnight of June. The female beetles lays eggs singly or in clusters mostly inside the loose bark, on the trunk and cordons. The larva hatched from the egg penetrates the trunk and creates a tunnel. The infestation of this pest is not understood as the husk gets stuck in the tunnel without being thrown out.

Control Measures –

  • The adult stage is important as no systemic and contact insecticides work for control.
  • After April pruning, in the pre-monsoon period, the loose bark on the vine should be removed by hand.
  • Light traps should be used to control adult beetles.
  • If there is another stem borer-infested vineyard near our vineyard, a net should be installed.
